Internship

Research Internship

A project scoped with you to fit your coursework and interests, for academic credit.

Hours
Flexible; typically 6–10 hours a week for a semester.
Location
West Berkeley, CA (on site)

This internship is built around your education. We work with you, and with your faculty advisor where your program requires one, to scope a research or engineering project that fits your curriculum and your interests. The project is yours: you set the goals with us, do the work, and present what you learned.

Example areas

  • Microfluidics and fluid handling.
  • Instrumentation, sensors and data acquisition.
  • Embedded systems and firmware.
  • Assay development and molecular diagnostics.
  • Lab automation and AI-assisted engineering tools.

About you

  • Enrolled in a science or engineering program at UC Berkeley or another college or university nearby.
  • Curious and self-directed, with a question you want to explore or a skill you want to build.
  • Able to earn academic credit or complete a capstone or independent study with this project.

What you get

  • A project scoped to your curriculum, with regular mentorship from our engineers.
  • Access to our lab, fabrication tools, and AI-native engineering workflow.
  • Work you can show: a write-up, a demo, and a reference from people who watched you do it.

Why Mosaic

Mosaic Design Labs is an AI-native biomedical product development studio in West Berkeley. We design instruments and devices for biodefense, point-of-care diagnostics and scientific research: firmware, circuit boards, microfluidics, mechanical design, and the software that ties them together.

AI is part of how we work every day. Our own agents keep our inventory, draft our documents, drive our CAD and lab tools, and help us test ideas quickly. People make every decision that matters, and we hold the work to the standard medical devices demand.

We believe the best way to learn this work is as an apprentice: at the bench, next to engineers doing it for real, picking up the hands-on craft and the new AI-native tools at the same time. Whatever role you start in, we want you to leave more capable than you arrived, and we want to grow people into bigger roles here.

Pay

Unpaid; for academic credit, a capstone, or an independent study

How to apply

Apply through our form. We ask everyone for three things:

  • Your resume (PDF) or a link to it.
  • A portfolio of past projects or the accomplishments you are proudest of: photos, links, a repo, a short write-up. It does not have to be polished.
  • In your own words, what appeals to you about this role and where you hope to go with it. We use AI for a lot, but for these answers we want to hear you.
